Medical breakthrough for horses with chronic pain in feet and legs

Navicular syndrome, bone spavin, osteoarthritis, deformities, … we finally have a solution for these kinds of issues: BackSound®.

No more permanent lameness, constant pain or even premature euthanasia. Nearly 90% of patients returns to a clean gait in the pasture and even in competitions. This therapy is also available for top competition horses with minor recurring ailments.

Developed by EquiSound

BackSound® was developed and registered by EquiSound founder Michel Hoegaerts. For decennia, Michel has been specialising in movement-related issues in horses. Throughout the years, his clinic has been visited by countless horses suffering chronic pain in the feet and legs who had previously received a variety of unsuccessful treatments and who had little hope left of a fulfilling life, let alone a successful competitive career. Since 2012, he has been determined to find a solution – and it’s finally here.

How does it work?

BackSound® is a treatment whereby specifically targeted injections trigger an immune response in the horse exactly where the pain is located. During the administration of the therapy, we employ a device that determines the site of treatment up to 0,05mm accuracy: true precision work.

  • No full anaesthesia: Because the treatment takes place under a localised anaesthetic, your horse does not need to be put to sleep, and you can return home together within hours after the treatment.
  • Negative doping tests: no nasties are left in the horse’s blood, it will test negative for doping after three days.
  • Speedy results: BackSound® works very fast. Most horses will have a visibly improved gait within the first four weeks after the treatment. Some patients may experience a brief relapse due to the body’s strong immune response. Between 8 and 12 weeks post-treatment their condition will once again improve remarkably, and at the 12-week mark we expect to see a satisfying end result.
  • Excellent follow-ups: We will meticulously track your horse’s progress through your regular vet and videos you send us. You will also receive clear rehabilitation instructions and we will provide exercises and constant feedback for you to get back to work with your horse.

Widely applicable

We developed BackSound® for horses suffering from chronic pain in the legs or feet, for whom no other treatment is effective. A non-exhaustive list of conditions that can be treated with this technology:

  • Navicular syndrome
  • Laminitis
  • Bone spavin
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Calcification
  • Joint inflammation
  • Coffin bone fractures
  • Sidebone
  • Bone resorption
  • Deformities
  • Cartilage injuries

The treatment is aimed both at horses who have been at rest for a long time and at animals that are still being ridden. Top competition horses who occasionally suffer from mild but nagging ailments that do not improve through traditional treatment can also benefit.

Mitigating risk

We aim for the best results and meticulously adapt the treatment to the cause of the pain. That’s why we always perform a rigorous evaluation on your horse before we initiate a BackSound® treatment. We take ample time to speak to the owner and to analyse results of any prior examinations. Where necessary we perform further analyses ourselves. That way, we mitigate any risks and gain precise insight into the root of the issue.

Near-perfect success rate

The first BackSound® tests were performed in 2018 and 2019. Of the 14 first test cases, 13 horses now run without any irregularities. A total of 84 horses have been treated thus far, with the success rate remaining consistent. Well-prepared and thoroughly examined horses have a good chance to live a pain-free life after treatment. Only in rare cases additional treatment, for example to an additional leg, proved a necessity.
